Understanding your objectives,
Developing a reliable implementation plan,
Following through, and exceeding your expectations.
Whether you are developing a new golf course or are interested in design improvements on an existing course, my initial focus is on listening to you. What are your objectives? What do you hope to see with the final result? With that understanding established, I’ll get started with a detailed course analysis study if we are working on a renovation, remodel or restoration project. On a new golf course project, I’ll develop multiple golf course routing options to study and evaluate until we determine one that fully addresses your needs and gives you the best opportunity for success. This first step is very interactive and can be very interesting with a wide range of design ideas to discuss and consider. I think it is good to “get out in left field” with ideas at this stage so that we can fully understand what’s possible within the parameters that you have set. Vetting a wide range of design ideas at this stage leads to a stronger and more well-rounded final design solution that we can commit to it with confidence and excitement.
Once we’ve established the design parameters for your project, we’ll begin to work up conceptual designs (new course projects) or initial master plans (existing course projects) for review that start to give form to your vision for the golf course. Detailed concept plans, perspective sketches and rough grading plans are all used to create a better understanding of what the course will look like when completed. As we finalize the final master plan or concept plan for the golf course I will then put together a detailed cost estimate for the construction or renovation work so that we can review, evaluate and confirm the proper scope of work for the project relative to your budget. We’ll continue revising the final plan until it’s scope of work matches the available budget.
The final step of the “planning” process is the development of detailed construction documents and specifications that define the contractor’s work on site. This step is critical in making sure that we can manage the construction costs throughout the process and also helps us anticipate all potential cost impacts. With a full set of construction documents and written construction specifications that describe the quality of the work expected from the contractors, we can then get bids from various contractors to do the work. I will use my experience (over 20 years) to help manage the bid process on your behalf, ensuring that we secure a qualified contractor, one who provides the best value for your budget and one that will make for a good team-member as we all work together to complete a successful project.
The most critical step in the process is the construction review. It’s more than just “construction review” though. My regular presence during construction is necessary to ensure that we capitalize on every opportunity to refine the design in the dirt, visualizing future golfing perspectives and experiences on each hole so that they are fully realized strategically, create maximum enjoyment and playability and set up beautiful aesthetics and visuals. I also use the site visits to confirm the quality of the construction work, making sure that features and materials are being built and installed per the specifications. Large sums of money are spent every day during construction, and every decision can have costly implications. A regular presence on site is necessary to keep a responsible eye on the expenditure of money and the quality control of the work. Hundreds of decisions are needed throughout the construction process and they must be made correctly and on a timely basis to avoid additional project costs and to make sure that the finished project realizes it’s full potential.
The goal of my involvement on every project is to put my client in a position to be a leader in their market. Whether it is a local market, a regional market or a national market, I view every design commission as a competition in which we need to out-compete the other golf courses in the market. In the final analysis, the only measure of whether my design input is a success is in the success of my clients after their courses open, or re-open. If golfers find our design work completely enjoyable and fully engaging in the golfing experience, and if they return time and time again to play, then we can expect to be successful. My goal is to exceed my client’s expectations on every project, giving them a finished golf course that they can be supremely proud of for many years.
